I earned my PhD in 2003 in Afro-American Studies with a graduate certificate in Advanced Feminist Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. I have been a professor for over twenty years, mentoring undergraduates and guiding graduate students thrI research and teach classes on the area of Black women's intellectual history. In the field of Black women's studies, I have authored four books, including Black Women's Yoga History (2021), Black Passports: Travel Memoirs... (2014), and Black Women in the Ivory Tower (2007). I have also co-edited five books including Black Women and Public Health (2021) Black Women and Social Justice Education (2019), Black Women's Mental Health (2017), and African Americans and Community Engagement in Higher Education (2010).
Engaging the five levels of practice from my guide Black Feminist Writing, I work with scholars in the humanities, social sciences, STEM, and authors in areas of race and gender studies. In addition to academic book projects, I also work with select projects in creative nonfiction as well as memoir or autobiography. This site is a notepad of my meditations on books. While I do not take requests for independent reviews, I do consider review requests from academic, trade, or news presses as my time and inclination permit.
